The Importance of Blogs

Google, as you may know by now, is very secretive about its algorithm. However, they do provide several hints towards how to provide what they’re basically looking for – websites with up-to-date, relevant, and trust worthy content. One of the ways to prove to Google, so to speak, that your content is one or all of those things is to consistently update your website.

Generally, the content on the pages of a website is fairly stable, meaning it might have a few edits or additions once in a while, but not enough to warrant a label of “my website is updated daily.” So the benefit of having a blog on your site is that it allows you to have that consistently updated content without constantly rewriting your various page content.

A blog allows you to basically update your site with generally relevant content in small doses with high frequency, which is a huge part of what Google assesses when determining your ultimate page rank. So having a blog is a huge SEO tool in that sense. For instance, let’s take Leisure Time Pool as an example.

Leisure Time Pool has a blog on their site, which they use to make frequent updates about various pool services and specials. What this does is tell Google that they are a reliable source of information for this topic – pool services. In doing so, their website will be higher ranked for things like “pool cleaning,” “pool maintenance,” and “pool services.” Their blog has helped them establish themselves as a reliable and valid source for Google, and has therefore positively affected their page rank.

Another example is this very blog. While the web design portfolio portion of this website is a helpful tool in increasing my authority as a design and development source, it is not updated frequently enough to really help me gain page rank quickly. The design and development blog portion of the site, allows me to update daily about various design and development related topics, eventually convincing Google that this is, indeed, a site which has design and development resources, thereby increasing my page rank.

Overall, blogs act as a bit of a funnel, allowing you to tackle a broad range of topics and subjects that are related to your website. Once on your site, people can check your pages (versus blog posts) for more specific items. So blogs can be very helpful. In general, blogs allow you to make frequent updates to your site, thereby increasing your authority, and therefore page rank in and for Google.
